Boating in Periyar Lake
The Periyar Lake lies at the heart of the sanctuary, which is a veritable
paradise for all wildlife lovers. Situated within the boundaries of the Western
Ghats in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Periyar National Park and Tiger
Reserve is one of the most captivating wildlife parks in the world.
Periyar is a park where one can witness playful pachyderms roaming freely
with their family and friends, whose population is currently around 800. The
population of tigers is also increasing appreciably. The landscape varies from
hilly to flat grassland areas at the edges of the lakes. The vegetation is of
moist deciduous type.
A boat ride on the lake will make your Periyar tour absolutely fantastic. The
lake is also the most ideal place to watch the birds. So take a boat ride and
enjoy the picturesque surroundings of the lake.
Boating facilities are also available in the Periyar Lake and elephants can be
seen drinking water from the Periyar Lake.

Sighting the elephants from the boat is very easy, as they come in herds
near the lake to frolic in the water.

This is the only sanctuary in India where you can see wild animals at
close range sitting in the safety of a boat.

The Periyar wild life sanctuary is famous for elephants, tigers, gaur,
sambar deer, wild boar, lion tailed monkeys, and the Nilgiri Tahr in the
higher rock formations.

Tourists can enjoy boat rides in the lake and view these wild animals at

Boating on Periyar lake was the first programme that was introduced in
Periyar Tiger Reserve. Seating capacity of the boats varies from 15 to
150. The boat trips are scheduled at 7 am, 9.30 am, 11.30 am, 2 pm and
4 pm.
